The Stethoscope – An Important Diagnostic Tool

A professional auscultation of children and adults can detect diseases and inflammations early, potentially altering the course of the illness significantly. Especially crucial organs like the heart and lungs, which are otherwise difficult to examine, can be checked for abnormalities using stethoscopes. For this reason, stethoscopes are often used in cardiology.

For emergency services, this examination tool can play a vital role. Paramedics can assess at the scene of an accident whether essential organs have been damaged and take appropriate action.

Stethoscopes are also commonly used in conjunction with a reflex hammer. With the stethoscope, sound is examined, which is produced by tapping. This way, potential cavities can be detected.

A traditional stethoscope consists of four elements:

Components of a Stethoscope
A stethoscope consists of a chest piece, tube, ear tubes, and ear tips.

The Chest Piece

The chest piece, also known as the head or headpiece, is the central component of the stethoscope and contains a diaphragm inside that captures acoustic waves, causing it to vibrate. It is placed on the patient at the area being examined.

The diaphragm inside the chest piece receives the acoustic signals and generates its own signal, which is transmitted through the tube to the ear tubes. These vibrations are perceived as sound. To ensure the signal reaches the doctor without distortion, the ear tips provide the necessary ear sealing.

High-quality stethoscopes are characterized by a chest piece with substantial mass, as the chest piece should remain still while the body is vibrating. The larger mass produces higher inertia, reducing vibrations of the chest piece. The larger membrane side is usually used for adult patients.

The Tube

A typical stethoscope tube has a length of 65 to 70 cm. It should not be longer and should be as rigid as possible to ensure optimal sound transmission. There are three different types of stethoscope tubes:

Stethoscope Tube
Acoustic signals are transmitted through the stethoscope tube to the ear tubes.
  • Monotube (Y-shape) is single-lumen and the most commonly used tube. Both ears receive sound from the same tube.
  • Double-lumen stethoscopes are classic models with two tubes, known as double-lumen tubes. The separate channels to the ears allow for more differentiated sound perception.
  • Dual-lumen tube is the modern implementation of the double-lumen tube. It consists of a single tube split by a divider, allowing both ears to receive sound through different channels, but in one unified tube.

Ear Tubes and Ear Tips

The ear tubes consist of two tubes with tension springs and ear tips. The ear tubes of a stethoscope are connected at the base by a spring. To ensure a proper fit in the ear canals, the ear tubes are aligned at an ergonomic angle. When positioned correctly, the ear tubes 'click' forward, pressing the ear tips into the ear canals or pressing together behind the neck when the ear tubes are hung around the neck.

The ear tips provide the necessary sealing of the ear canal for effective noise reduction. The ear tips are made from fine material, allowing them to conform optimally to the shape of the ear.

Medicalcorner24's ear tips offer excellent acoustic sealing while ensuring comfortable wear. Luxamed ear tips from our online shop are available in soft and hard variants.

What Different Types of Stethoscopes Are Available?

Despite their uniform function, there are various types of stethoscopes suited for different applications. There are acoustic and electronic stethoscopes, stethoscopes with single and dual tubes, as well as stethoscopes in various sizes, such as those designed for children and infants.

Flat-Head Stethoscope

Flat-Head Stethoscope
Flat-head stethoscopes are perfect for general examinations and blood pressure measurements.

The simplest type is the flat-head stethoscope. On one side of the chest piece, it has a membrane, while the other side is usually ergonomically designed for a comfortable grip.

Due to its flat construction, the chest piece can be easily slid under the patient during examination. Flat-head stethoscopes are also particularly well-suited for general examinations or blood pressure measurements in hospitals and nursing care.

Dual-Head Stethoscope with Bell and Diaphragm

Dual-Head Stethoscope
For high and low frequencies – the dual-head stethoscope.

The dual-head stethoscope was originally invented by American cardiologist Dr. David Littmann. The stethoscope consists of a dual-head chest piece with a bell on one side and a diaphragm on the other.

The diaphragm is ideal for listening to high frequencies, while the bell is suited for low frequencies, which are especially common in cardiology. Occasionally, dual-head stethoscopes are equipped with two differently sized diaphragms, omitting the bell. The smaller diaphragm is often used for neck examinations or as a pediatric stethoscope.

Pediatric Stethoscopes – Stethoscopes for Children and Infants

Pediatric Stethoscope
Medicalcorner24 offers high-quality stethoscopes for young and old.

When examining children, special pediatric stethoscopes or infant stethoscopes are used. Stethoscopes used in pediatrics are smaller in size, adapted to the proportions of young patients.

With dual-head and dual-lumen stethoscopes, auscultation of both children and adults is possible using the same stethoscope.

Cardiology Stethoscopes and Rappaport Stethoscopes

In cardiology, stethoscopes are needed for the very precise auscultation of high- and low-frequency sounds. Another special form of acoustic stethoscope is the Rappaport stethoscope. It features a short dual-lumen tube instead of a Y-shaped monotube and a dual-head chest piece. The Rappaport stethoscope has a switchable chest piece. The dual-lumen tube provides optimal sound conduction for differentiated auscultation.

Electronic Stethoscopes

Electronic stethoscopes amplify sound, making it easier to auscultate particularly quiet body sounds and to listen to patients in a noisy environment, such as in a hospital emergency room.
